The Black and White of Race and Reentry
Laura Sovine and I have been examining issues of race and the criminal justice system both professionally and personally for more than a decade. Re-entry starts at entry. Therefore to understand how to intervene to improve outcomes for re-entry, one must understand the complex factors contributing to mass incarceration in our nation. Through formal presentation, group activities, and a light hearted and informal conversation, the session will explore the nature of race, how we understand race, historical factors of race and the criminal justice system. The presentation will also seek to assist participants in becoming more comfortable talking about these issues, and provide them with tools with which to intervene at all levels of the system.
